Sarah Doehring Obituary, IDAHO — Sarah Doehring, a longtime smokejumper, National Smokejumper Association (NSA) board member, and respected leader in the firefighting community, passed away unexpectedly on August 26 from complications of cancer.
Doehring dedicated 24 seasons to serving as a smokejumper, building a distinguished career with assignments at Missoula Smokejumper Base (MSO) from 1991–1996 and 1998–2011, as well as Grangeville Smokejumper Base (GAC) in 1997 and from 2012–2014.
Throughout her career, Doehring made history as the first female smokejumper base manager at Grangeville, Idaho, serving in that leadership role from 2012 to 2014. Her experience, commitment, and leadership supported strengthen the smokejumper community she served for more than two decades.
Following her active smokejumping career, Doehring continued contributing to the National Smokejumper Association as a member of its Board of Directors. She served as Treasurer, bringing her knowledge and dedication to supporting the organization and fellow smokejumpers.
The National Smokejumper Association shared its grief over Doehring’s passing, remembering her as a valued colleague, friend, and fellow jumper. The organization extended its deepest condolences to her husband, Butch, as well as Sarah’s relatives and loved ones.
Memorial services honoring Doehring’s life will be confirmed in several locations in the coming days, based on to the National Smokejumper Association.
Sarah Doehring’s legacy will remain connected to the smokejumper community through her years of service, leadership, and contributions to wildfire action taken efforts. Her dedication and impact will go on to be remembered by those who worked alongside her and those whose lives she touched.
